The Iroquois League
|
The Iroquois Confederacy, or League , was an agreement between 5, later 6, tribes of the FN. This agreement was a peaceful agreement, one that told all tribes belonging to this agreement would only have peaceful trade, and not war. The agreement also said that the tribes would ally each other in times of distress. The Mohawk Tribe was the biggest member of this group, and the most Easternmost too. The Mohawk Tribe had 9 representatives of the Iroquois Confederacy. They had 3 Clans, (Turtle, Bear, and Wolf) and from each Clan came 3 representatives. Out of these 3 Clans, the Turtle Clan was the most Easternmost, and the Wolf Clan was the most Westernmost. The invention of this Confederacy, by the Mohawks, is believed to be done by their Chief, Deganawida. Though, each tribe from the Confederacy believes that their Chiefs came up with the idea, so the real creator is not known. What is known though, is that the Mohawks were the first to establish a trade with the Vikings (Europeans).
